Assessment Crew Heads to the Field

This week the AWSMP stream assessment crew will be out surveying past stream restoration projects to monitor their performance. The crew uses survey instruments to determine whether the cross-sectional shape and longitudinal profile of the stream channel have changed during recent storms. The crew establishes an accurate elevation, stretches a measuring tape across the stream from bank to bank, and then uses a rod to measure the depth to the stream bottom every foot or so. For a longitudinal profile, the measurements are taken down the middle of the stream channel. The crew measures the length and depth of channel riffles and pools as they travel downstream. The results are plotted and compared to past surveys to measure channel response and the ability of project designs to maintain stability. The data collected will provide valuable information for future restoration designs.
