Common Winterberry

Common Winterberry. Photo by Katja Schulz

Did you know common winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a holly native to the Catskills? After the native shrub loses its leaves each autumn, you are left with brightly colored berries packed on stems. What a beautiful way to add color to the winter landscape! Winterberry thrives in the moist woods bordering streams and is easy to grow with few diseases and pests.
