2019 Stream Explorers Youth Adventure

Join us for a fun-filled day of sci­ence-based stream activ­i­ties on Sat­ur­day, April 27, 2019 and become a Stream Explor­er! This year’s event is designed for kids in grades 3 through 7 who live in the towns of Shan­dak­en, Wood­stock, Olive and Hur­ley. Inves­ti­gate stream ecosys­tems, explore the dynam­ics of a stream, hike to a majes­tic water­fall, par­tic­i­pate in excit­ing out­door activ­i­ties, learn from stream edu­ca­tors and water sci­en­tists, and become a pro­tec­tor of our water resources!

The one-day Stream Explor­ers Youth Adven­ture runs from 8:30 am through 5:00 pm at the Ashokan Cen­ter in Olive­bridge, NY. Sign-in and reg­is­tra­tion begins at 8:30 am.

Par­ents and guardians are wel­come to attend. Reg­is­ter by April 5 for an ear­ly bird dis­count of $10 per per­son. After April 5 the fee is $15 per per­son. Reg­is­tra­tion clos­es on April 19. Save the Date! Ashokan Watershed Conference on April 29

How do we sus­tain local eco­nom­ic devel­op­ment in a chang­ing envi­ron­ment? That is the top­ic of a day-long con­fer­ence in the Ashokan Water­shed on April 29, 2017. The con­fer­ence will be held at The Ashokan Cen­ter in Olive­bridge, NY. Con­fer­ence ses­sions will focus on cli­mate change, sus­tain­able eco­nom­ic devel­op­ment, com­mu­ni­ty plan­ning, inva­sive species, local fish­eries, and DEP reser­voir oper­a­tions. Plan­ning board and zon­ing board of appeals mem­bers can receive cer­tifi­cates for attend­ing four hours of training.

This year, AWSMP is excit­ed to offer a co-occur­ring “Stream Explor­ers” youth con­fer­ence also on April 29 at The Ashokan Cen­ter. The “Stream Explor­ers” youth con­fer­ence will be most appro­pri­ate for chil­dren ages 8–14 or grades 3–8. All youth must be accom­pa­nied by a fam­i­ly mem­ber attend­ing the Ashokan Water­shed Con­fer­ence. The youth con­fer­ence will fea­ture hands-on out­door activ­i­ties taught by CCE edu­ca­tors dur­ing the morn­ing, and an after­noon gorge hike adven­ture in the after­noon. Chil­dren will join their fam­i­lies for lunch in the con­fer­ence din­ing hall.

Full length videos from the 2015 Ashokan Water­shed Con­fer­ence held on April 10 at the Ashokan Cen­ter in Olive­bridge are now avail­able for view­ing on the AWSMP Youtube chan­nel.

Watch and lis­ten as Bob Steud­ing speaks about the build­ing of the Ashokan Reser­voir and the social forces that drove it. Learn from Pro­fes­sion­al Engi­neer George Fowler how his­tor­i­cal stream man­age­ment prac­tices have caused last­ing impacts on our region’s streams. Become engaged while lis­ten­ing to for­est ento­mol­o­gist Mark Whit­more and Town of Wood­stock Envi­ron­men­tal Com­mis­sion Chair­man Jim Han­son explain how inva­sive insects like Hem­lock Wool­ly Adel­gid and Emer­ald Ash Bor­er are threat­en­ing our native forests, the impacts they will cause and the work that com­mu­ni­ties need to do to pre­pare for them. Final­ly,  hear from a pan­el of “steam experts” as they answer some of the more com­mon and press­ing ques­tions that the pub­lic has about streams and how they are managed.

This is a great oppor­tu­ni­ty for those who missed the con­fer­ence but want to hear the speak­er pre­sen­ta­tions, or for those who attend­ed and want to revis­it some infor­ma­tion  they may have for­got­ten. Save the Date! AWSMP Announces 2015 Watershed Conference

AWSMP is pleased to announce our 6th Annu­al Ashokan Water­shed Con­fer­ence! The con­fer­ence will be Sat­ur­day, April 11, 2015 at The Ashokan Cen­ter in Olive­bridge, NY. This year’s theme is Back to the Future: Cre­at­ing a New Water­shed Lega­cy. A fea­tured speak­er this year is his­to­ri­an and local res­i­dent Bob Steud­ing, the author of The Last of the Hand­made Dams: The Sto­ry of the Ashokan Reser­voir.  Oth­er pre­sen­ta­tions will cov­er the future of stream man­age­ment and inva­sive species.
