The Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program (AWSMP) is hosting a free experiential demonstration titled, “Reading the Landscape: Being Safe While Enjoying Streams, Forests and Nature,” at Davis Park as part of Olive Day on Saturday, September 12. The interactive demonstration is designed to build confidence, curiosity, and safety awareness when venturing into the woods, particularly near streams. Olive Day runs all day from 9 AM – 6 PM, and the AWSMP demonstration will take place at 1 PM.
The program will be led by experienced outdoor educators from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County. The session will cover essential backcountry skills, including:
- What to pack for a day in the woods
- Reading and interpreting topographic maps
- Navigating using a compass
- Practicing Leave No Trace principles
- Knowing what to do if you become injured or lost
Participants will leave with practical knowledge and greater confidence to safely enjoy the local landscape. Beyond the demonstration, AWSMP will be present throughout the day. Visitors are invited to stop by the AWSMP booth to learn more about stream stewardship, local recreational opportunities, and watershed education.
